Internet usage in India

Published by kedaar under News

Internet & Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) has recently published their report on Internet usage in India. As per their study it is found that there are 52 million active internet users in India, while about 71 million Indians have ‘claimed’ to have used the Internet in 2009.

‘Claimed users’ are those who said they had used the internet in some form, say for checking results online, email or searching during the year. It is 19% year on year growth.

This report is based on survey conducted across 31 Cities, among 19000 households and 68000 individuals.

Thou the growth is steady the penetration of internet is slow just 24% of total urban individuals.

You can read detail report at http://www.iamai.in

Identification rules for registrants

Published by kedaar under Domain News, cctlds

I just read the news that Argentina (.AR) has passed the Identification requirement for domain registrations as well existing domains. Argentina (.AR) is third country after China (.cn) and Russia (.ru). There are many others who have such requirements. This is good initiative and definitely will reduce the false whois information. False whois information leads to lots for misuse of domain name, which not only limit to Spamming but can also will control money laundry.

Who are the next to follow this route is the big question?

In terms of other cctlds I guess everyone will start following sooner or latter.

In the cctlds investment point of view I guess this will only bring the serious domain investors into picture.

in domain investment ideas

Published by kedaar under .in Domains

.in domain name promo is ending soon. There is a rumor that this promo will extend till September 2010. I personally don’t think its good Idea. The extended promo might lead .in domains in .info way.

In this current promotional prices Indian Domain Names are available as cheapest as $1.89 USD. So, it is the good time to make use of it at optimum.

.in domain registration went global on February 2005 and as per current policy any individual can register .in domain name. There are seven (7) extensions including third level domain names which are allowed to register by any individual.

* .in
* co.in
* net.in
* org.in
* firm.in
* gen.in (general)
* ind.in (individuals)

Out of these seven extensions .in is the only second level domain and very popular among domainers. Indians were using .co.in as a preferred domain extension prior to 2005.

If you see popularity of the domain extension among Indians, it is still .com and followed by .co.in. .in extension is new to Indian audience but it is picking up very fast.

Domain name investment is all about future. Warren Buffet most successful investor in world also picks ups his picks when they are not popular. The prime reason why .in will flourish is because of huge English speaking internet user base with growth in internet usage among Indians.

The investment points of view there are few niches which will go long way in .in domain space. Some of them are as follows:
LLL.in: Short domain names are always popular and easy to remember. There is no exception for .in extension. Currently there are no premium letter LLL .in domains are available. This premium or non premium terms are more for domainers but if you see end users it is irrelevant. Another reason to hunt these names is penetration of cell phone usage in India. There are more mobile internet users that fixed line internet. And definitely typing short name on mobile is easier.

Geo Names: Geo domains are always good in investment point of you. They have residual value apart from developed ones. If you are trying to find out popular Geo domains then it is too late. All popular Geo’s are gone. Even third level domain names are not available. But still one can buy it in aftermarket at affordable cost. They are worth investing.

Generic Domains:  There are plenty of generic domains are available in .in space. I will give more priority over Dictionary words that generic name because in year 2010 all top dictionary words are already registered and remaining ones are not of that good quality.

Product Names: Product names are one more category where you will have good returns. If you could not flip those names then at least you can easily developed and earn money.

Non English Names: India is the country of varsity. There are 28 states and more that 50 spoken languages. Though English is prime language for business and education, others like Marathi, Hindi, Bengali and Telgu are most spoken written languages. As an investor you can find widely used worlds from these languages. (Ref)

.co.in domain names: Yes, .co.in is popular extension in India after .com. Still end user prefers .co.in domain name. If you analyse the .in extension most of high value, premium, generic .in domain (2nd level) are registered. But some of the similar domain names are still available in .co.in space. Majority of domainer’s have neglected these names considering third level. But ground reality is end user still prefers .co.in and will continue to prefer for next few year. Another angle to this investment is Search Engines. Search engines are becoming more and more local. So far as per my analysis other than .in 2nd level domain all other 3rd level .ins are more likely to get priority to search engine result for country specific.

Most of above ideas are valid for any domain extension and will definitely give you the good returns.

Infrastructure growth of internet in India is very slow as well the literacy. So far use of internet is not gone beyond email, blogging and downloading music. Online Shopping and transactions are the areas which are growing rapidly in India.  As per my analysis Indian audiences will take another 3-4 years to get use to of .in. Only sad part about .in domain is renewal fee. I hope it will be reduced soon so that more individuals can participate in domain name registration.
